The strategies used by English department students in giving and receiving compliments

This qualitative research aims to find out the strategies used by students in giving and receiving compliments. The participants were graduate of English language education at Syiah Kuala University. In collecting data, researcher Discourse Completion Task (Henceforth called DCT) framework Xiang (2013). carried an interview adapted from Fattah (2020) elicit participants’ understanding conveying their compliments based on topic complimented. findings DCT revealed that there three four types compliment topics identified: appearance, ability/performance, possession. result showed they knew how utter each case. responses tend use appreciation tokens consisting 65 answers. return consists 11 responses, question 10 scale down 8 comment history 3 responses. While, praise upgrade, request, qualification consist 1 response, respectively. questionnaire results equal, which means favored using It occurred due habit daily conversation.
